Logline: A young whale and an octopus "debate" whether to join human society by fighting each other, but what starts out as a simple slap fight goes way too far.
Synopsis: A young whale wishes to join human society and get a degree, get a job, and earn money to pay for food. His childhood friend, an octopus, disagrees and thinks he should stay in the sea and eat fish. They don't work out this disagreement with polite civil discourse, they fight about it and take things over the edge.
Director Statement
Animated and drawn largely by one guy with a budget of 0 dollars, Fellow Aquarians is a film that deals with themes such as how the pressures of modern society to "make something of yourself" brings us more and more away from living off the land and how it affects the environment, but in a comedic, over-the-top story that's in the tradition of Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, and Invader Zim, basically the "two cartoon characters hitting each other with hammers" genre.
On one hand, this is a reflection of Erik Erickson's "Industry vs. Inferiority" Development Theory, which is about how how people develop a sense of self-worth and identity through accomplishments throughout their lives. On the other hand, this is a wild ride about two frenemies who have a simple argument about living off of eating fish vs. getting a job to buy food and take it way beyond the boundaries of appropriate social etiquette.
