On Italy's central Apennine mountains, one of Europe's most endangered mammals faces new threats to its survival. The Golden Fleece tells the extraordinary story of the Apennine chamois, which has never been the subject of a major television documentary before, and its fight to survive our changing climate.

At the end of WWII only a small group of about 40 Apennine chamois had managed to survive the unbridled hunt. The last remaining chamois took refuge in one of the wildest and most inaccessible areas of the mountains of central Italy, preventing anyone, predators or humans, from reaching them.

The chamois' refuge, a place known as La Camosciara, became the first part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.

Almost 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the chamois with the golden fleece have recolonised the greatest peaks of the National Park among bears and wolves, and are returning to reclaim the mountains of central Italy that once made up their habitat.

From summer through to late autumn, these tenacious mountain dwellers graze in high-altitude prairies at over 1,700m above sea level. But this year, something is not right.

By November, the climate in the park is unusually mild and the first snow, which should have arrived, is nowhere to be seen.

As December arrives, the chamois have not descended from the peaks to the lower wintering areas, as they are not layered with snow.

By January, the bare mountains are sounding a silent alarm.

How will the herds face their latest challenge – a winter without snow?

Tracking the chamois over almost a year and a half of filming to document its entire life cycle – today being disrupted by the nearly snowless season – this film shows the impact of climate change on the chamois and the ecosystems of central Italy.
