‘We were enslaved, sold in markets and raped,’ says one girl. ‘But they could not extinguish the light in our hearts.’ In 2014, Islamic State fighters kidnapped Yazidi girls from their villages in the mountains of Kurdistan, forcibly converted them to Islam and sold them as sex slaves to terrorists. Some of the girls were not even 14 years old. Today, many of them have been freed. With mutual love and support, they find the strength to look to the future once more and rebuild their lives in a refugee camp. Theatre-maker ‘Uncle Hussein’ helps them. He cries with them – and makes them laugh. Together they learn to deal with their deep trauma.
