Cured takes viewers inside the campaign that led to a pivotal yet largely unknown moment in the struggle for LGBTQ equality: the American Psychiatric Association's 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses. Prior to this decision, every lesbian and gay person was automatically classified as mentally ill; many were subjected to "cures" including lobotomy and electroshock. Combining eyewitness testimony with newly unearthed archival footage, this eye-opening film reveals how a small group of impassioned activists achieved this unexpected victory. Cured not only illuminates what was arguably the most significant turning point in Gay Liberation history, but also provides invaluable context for the ongoing effort to end conversion therapy.
