Phil Demers, an eccentric free spirit, becomes an unexpectedly popular animal trainer at the infamous MarineLand Animal Park. Imprinting with the park’s first walrus, Smooshi, Demers spends over a decade caring for Smooshi and a variety of other animals in increasingly dire and decrepit conditions. When Demers quits as a result of these concerns—and is accused of plotting to steal a walrus—Demers takes to social media and the courts, waging war to save Smooshi. Unconventional and heart wrenching, Demers’s crusade is also full of humor and hope, as he uses every tool available to take on a multi-million dollar industry.
