During the Elaine Massacre of 1919, hundreds of African-American men, women, and children were killed by white mobs and government troops in an effort to suppress Black sharecroppers’ unionization. On the 100th anniversary, a memorial is erected to commemorate, acknowledge, and heal a community’s painful past.
