What does it mean to be of a place? Of the sun and soil and bees, of the water and black ants and cowpeas. To be so entangled with an ecosystem, generation after generation, that nature and culture become one. Clans living in Tharaka, Kenya, have been subjected to colonialism and all that follows. Their indigeneity unthreaded by a powerful few pulling the world apart for profit. But Atharaka – ‘those of Tharaka’ – are remembering the power in their identity. Beside the Kithino River, they are reviving customs and enabling nature to regenerate: rethreading a complex biocultural system that brings balance, autonomy, and joy. This new film follows the community’s journey. Flowing through chapters on seed, kin and spirit, we bear witness as elders and Earth recall who Artharaka are, and where they belong. A story directed by Simon Mitambo from the Society for Alternative Learning and Transformation (SALT) in Kenya, filmed by Andy Pilsbury, and supported by the African Earth Jurisprudence Collective and Gaia Foundation.

The Cat That Lives in Your Dreams

In 2023, the environmental nonprofit organization Kay Pacha Initiative returned to the Amazon Rainforest to continue their work on the Motacu research station. The now completed research station sits in the Aquicuana Reserve, a remote and untouched region of the Bolivian Amazon where scientists will be able to study this vital ecosystem. Through the research done here Kay Pacha Initiative eventually hopes that a proposal can be made to the Bolivian government to dramatically expand the protected area of the reserve in the next several years. This documentary tells the story of Kay Pacha Initiative's return to the Amazon Rainforest, what goes into equipping and expanding the research station, how this project is affecting the lives of those that live in the region, and the plans to protect the Aquicuana Reserve in the future.
