On the occasion of December 21st, the shortest day of the year, join us online for a captivating streaming event featuring a delightful program of quirky, amusing, and insightful short films that showcase the best emerging talents in Italian cinema. The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, in collaboration with Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio (Italian Short Film Center), is excited to celebrate International Short Film Day with you.
This year we present a selection of five Italian contemporary shorts of different genres, all of them acclaimed by International Audience. This program will be available until December 31, 2024.

2023 – 20′ – Documentary - by Luca Ciriello
A summer spent in an Ape car by a group of teenagers from Aosta Valley: afternoons and evenings spent with trap music and drifting, and between fear of the police and parties with friends. School is about to start again, and the mountains around them are towering high.
Bad Penny
2023 – 15′ – Documentary - by Yuri Costantino
Anne is digging in her own memory to try to bring J., her life companion and air force officer, who disappeared after aerial combat, back home. Anne’s story is recounted as a stream of consciousness which blends together original archival war footage from various wars, crossing through different historical periods, without time continuity, becoming a universal, shared memory through pain and time.

December 1999. I remember that, in the midst of the Millennium Bug anxiety, I went to Enrico’s birthday party, a child who lived with his family in an old, isolated farmhouse.

Under the pretext of returning her wallet, an awkward young man courts the girl of his dreams from the ground floor of her building. Meanwhile, the middle-aged couple on the fourth floor of the same building, engage in erotic role-playing to rekindle the spark in their marriage, until the fates of the two couples collide… with disastrous consequences.

2023 – 14′ – Comedy - by Maurizio Forcella
In 1985, the Pope visits Atri, a small town in Abruzzo. It is an important event for the entire town. The whole community takes the day off to celebrate. Everyone is getting ready to welcome the Holy Father, even the farmers prepare for the big day, all dressed up in their Sunday best. However, little Fernando has other ideas. He manages to slip away from his family to go into town on his ramshackle scooter to the home of his sweetheart, Silvia, while the Pope is greeted by the enraptured crowds.
