VIRTUAL CLOSING NIGHT SELECTION
Don’t watch Breaking Fast on an empty stomach or with a vulnerable heart, because you will find yourself both starving for the food and longing for your own happy ending by the time Mike Mosallam’s film ends.
Haaz Sleiman (Apple TV’s Little America) plays Mo, a Lebanese man living in West Hollywood who’s dealing with unexpected heartbreak when his conservative and closeted boyfriend announces that he’s looking to marry a woman to get his religious parents off his back. Even though Mo is a huge fan of musical theater and cooking, he’s close with his family and doesn’t entirely fit into the WeHo gay scene.
As the start of Ramadan approaches, Mo strikes up a cautious friendship with the adorable Kal (Michael Cassidy, Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), a smart, charming actor who shares Mo’s passion for food and long talks. They find themselves breaking fast with one another almost every night, but can Mo fully learn to shake off his preconceived notions about someone who doesn’t share his culture or religion? Can two gay men from different backgrounds — horror of horrors! — not be judgmental in West Hollywood?
The scenes between Mo and Kal as they eat dinner and discuss their families are warm and charged with an innocence that you don’t find in many modern romances — especially ones that center on LGBTQ+ characters. While other gay men enjoy the nightlife of LA, a sweet romance blossoms between Mo and Kal. In another film, Mo’s desire to be a good Muslim would create conflict. But Kal loves that part of Mo. Their conversations about personal trauma and faith only makes their bond grow stronger.
Sleiman brings a dorky earnestness to Mo, creating a character who’s never arrogant and is eager to evolve and grow. Cassidy is a smiling, receptive presence, so it’s no wonder that Mo can’t resist giving into his flirtation with Kal.
Breaking Fast is genuine, open-hearted, and a rare positive addition to the LGBTQ+ romantic comedy canon. Your heart will be as warm as the food.
