Legends are a pathway to the knowledge of our ancestors. These are stories we grew up with, reimagined in innovative and creative ways to ensure we continue to understand the world around us. These shorts programs may differentiate from the shorts programs presented at our in-person festival screenings due to the various geoblocking restraints on each film. ﻿

Rooted in Mi′kmaw storytelling, this animated short follows two young friends whose eel-fishing trip becomes a lesson in courage, problem-solving, and cultural connection. Alan Syliboy is a Mi′kmaq artist from Millbrook whose petroglyph-inspired work has elevated Indigenous art.

Wolverine and Little Thunder: An Eel Hunting Adventure

While picking berries a woman insults the spirit of a bear who disguises himself as a handsome man and lures her to his den. Kaa,Laa Mary Goddard grew up in Yakutat and left her hometown to study film before returning to Southeast Alaska.

In the ancient Melanau kingdom, a humble fisherman’s life unravels when his sister is taken as a sacrifice. Defying rulers, spirits, and fate, his quest to save her forges him into a warrior king whose choices ignite a war among nations. Peter Toyat is an Indigenous filmmaker whose blockbuster dramas explore suffering, death, and redemption across Malaysian history.

Please note that not all films screened during the in-person Festival will be available online. Online Festival works are subject to location geoblocking and distribution rights. Access to online screenings starts on Monday, June 8, 2026 at 10:00 AM ET and ends Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET; this cutoff applies to all forms of access, including online single tickets purchased after June 11, 2026 (which is the last day to purchase for a guaranteed 72-hour access window).
