CLÉMENT, ALEX ET TOUS LES AUTRES | CHENG-CHUI KUO | FRANCE | 2019 | 74 MIN | V.O.F. S.-T.A.

Clément (Yannis Bougeard) has his hands full: an antagonistic ex who still harbors feelings for him (David Mora); a roommate who never opens up (Carolina Jurczak); a sister who never knocks (Chloé Berthier); and a new, often-shirtless lodger who may or may not want to shag him (Bellamine Abdelmalek). Piled on that, he happens to be a filmmaker for whom filmmaking does not come painlessly, working on a script that unspools in black and white vignettes, exorcising his twin demons of loneliness and emptiness through the story of an older woman (Nadine Alari, who died in 2016 and to whom the film is dedicated) and the young homeless man to whom she’s drawn. Writer-director Cheng-Chui Kuo interlocks his film with these kinds of innovative approaches. One minute Kuo is ping-ponging between characters during a tense, wine-soaked group session of Truth or Dare, the next he’s conjuring living projections of the past, which glide along the walls – architecture turned dreamscape. All in the service of shaking up and stripping bare this motley crew of misfits for whom the very idea of being loved is a radical proposition.
