EL CAZADOR (YOUNG HUNTER) | MARCO BERGER | ARGENTINE / ARGENTINA | 2020 | 101 MIN | V.O. ESPAGNOLE S.-T.A. & F. / SPANISH S.-T.EN. & F.

As the opening credits wisp on and off the screen like smoke, we see clips of a sun-lit forest juxtaposed with an unsettling soundtrack. Will this be a horror film? A thriller? The less you know about El cazador (Young Hunter) going in, the better, but here are the tantalizing basics. With intense black eyes, 15-year-old Ezéquiel (Juan Pablo Cestaro) searches for a willing partner, checking out a classmate at the urinals, making furtive passes at a friend, and ogling a shirtless, tattooed older boy at a skatepark. Only the latter object of his attention, Mono (Lautaro Rodríguez), turns into a connection, the two lounging around half-naked in the Argentinian heat and playing in Ezéquiel’s parents’ pool while they’re away in Europe. When his parents return the two use the house of a man identified as Mono’s distant relative (Juan Barberini), getting to explore their sexuality in private, though Ezéquiel keeps noticing strange signs. A cigarette burning in the grass. A noise outside the shower window. And something begins to occupy Mono’s thoughts. Something distracting, gnawing. But what? The answer will blur the line between the hunter and the hunted.
