Les premières images de Monsoon s’ouvrent sur un plan en plongée à vol d’oiseau, dévoilant des rues bondées d’Asie au trafic chaotique. Elles mettent la table pour l’histoire de Kit, un Britannique d’origine vietnamienne, qui se trouve littéralement submergé par la culture qui l’a vu naître. Alors qu’il retourne pour la première fois en 30 ans à Saïgon, depuis son départ suite à la guerre, il tente de retrouver ses repères. Si sa physionomie en trompe plus d’un, il demeure néanmoins un étranger. Arrivera-t-il à renouer avec son passé?
Ce long-métrage de Hong Khaou est le fruit d’un prix récolté au Festival du film de Sundance, le Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award, suite à son premier long-métrage Lilting (I+N 27). Avec Monsoon, il démontre sans conteste sa maitrise de l’image, dans un film contemplatif, où le traitement de l’homosexualité (les aventures sans lendemain, les amitiés naissantes) se fait au gré de la quête identitaire et, symboliquement, de la mousson (monsoon), une saison propice aux changements atmosphériques, des pluies abondantes aux vents changeants.
Kit (Henry Golding, of Crazy Rich Asians fame) arrives in “relentless” Saigon exhausted from travel. He has come to honour his “formidable” mother by returning her ashes to the country she once fled. A country he has not seen since he was six, a fact his cousin Lee (David Tran) seems to begrudge, though Lee offers him guidance on his quest. As he moves from motorbike to motorbike, hotel to hotel, tryst to tryst, Kit scours Saigon and Hanoi for the locations that defined his family’s past – both the paved over and the preserved. Instead of a proper place to scatter his mother’s ashes, what he keeps finding is the memory of war hanging over a rapidly expanding country, as well as a fellow “old soul” in Lewis (Parker Sawyers), an American expat who is a stickler for truth, the very thing with which Kit struggles. Cambodian-British filmmaker Hong Khaou (Lilting, I+N 27) vividly realizes the colourful and complex Vietnam where motorbikes swarm like agitated bees and pink and yellow lotuses splash Monet-like across a floor, following Kit as he slowly constructs a future from the remnants of what is gone.
