UNSOUND | IAN WATSON | AUSTRALIE / AUSTRALIA | 2020 | 88 MIN | V.O.A. / ENGLISH

Noah (a fetching, charismatic Reece Noi) is on tour with Moniqua (Christine Anu), a nostalgic act who’s also his friend and mentor, but he’s sick of tour boyfriends and “never-ending 90s pop.” The headstrong Finn (Yiana Pandelis) runs a financially at-risk community centre by day, a Deaf Club by night. These dueling storylines converge as Noah returns to Sydney just as Finn enters the middle of his transition as a trans man, a “journey” which Noah wants to go on with him when they have a fateful (and funny) meeting, though his shoddy track record with promises foretells trouble. The two evolve from lip reading and typing out responses to Finn teaching Noah sign language, romantic sparks lighting up their encounters. However, the extent to which Noah can put himself in Finn’s shoes is tested when his mother’s noise complaints endanger the livelihood of Deaf Club and Finn becomes less and less satisfied with simply being palatable to others. The mould-breaking Unsound, its deeper themes carried along on guitar strums, champions the dual importance of outside and inside, loud and soft; of not just hearing the music, but feeling it.
