Made in remembrance of the 75th anniversary of the detonation of nuclear weapons in the US and Japan and the 340th anniversary of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, which forced Spanish colonizers out of New Mexico and returned sovereignty to Native people.

Atomkraftwerk Zwentendorf is a monument to the power of public protest and the potential of a democratic vote. Forty years ago, in what was only the second referendum ever to be held in their country, Austrians voted against opening a nuclear power plant that had already been built. After catastrophic flooding across Europe, Hope Tucker visited the nuclear power plant outside of Vienna that would have been powered by the same model reactor as Fukushima.

This obituary is composed of sequences of cyanotypes, exposed in the sand using paper sensitized with handmade emulsion and negatives from a 1954 Hollywood film. Rates of cancer in the film’s cast and crew reflect that it was shot downwind during the period of above ground nuclear testing. Handful of Dust, produced in the Utah canyon where the 1954 film was shot, is designed as an antidote to recover the memory of the downwinders.

Join us as we dive into the experimental documentary shorts and filmmaking practice of filmmaker Hope Tucker – whose most recent short, What Travelers Are Saying About Jornada Del Muerto, screened at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and here in Memphis as part of our Sundance Satellite Screenings! Tucker’s shorts, or obituaries, as part of her longitudinal project The Obituary Project, contain a rigor that invites viewers to consider constructions of public memory, the long lasting impacts of nuclear research on place and people, and largely through text and materials, illustrates the ways in which people interact and reframe the various sites she’s visited throughout the twenty-two year span of the Project. The evening will begin with a screening of three of the filmmaker’s works, and will be followed by a conversation centered on Hope’s approach and experiences with creating experimental documentary work.&nbsp;
