KAMA’ĀINA (CHILD OF THE LAND) - Winner, Special Jury Award for Storytelling A queer sixteen-year-old girl, Mahina, resides in the predominantly Native Hawaiʻian neighborhood of Wai’anae, Oahu. After suffering abuse from her stepfather, Mahina must navigate life on the streets, until she eventually finds refuge at the Pu’uhonua o Wai’anae – Hawaiʻi’s largest organized homeless encampment. Kimi began her career as a Story Editor curating short-form content for Snapchat Inc., before transitioning full time to filmmaking. Kimi’s feature script, MOUTH, won the grand prize for Best Narrative Feature in the 2015 BlueCat Screenwriting Competition. She also wrote and directed SUGAR, a short proof of concept, which had a successful festival run and was a finalist for the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. Kimi was most recently staffed on the Amazon Studios + Blossom Films drama series THE EXPATRIATES, based off the NYTimes best-selling novel. She is currently a story editor on Netflix's LOCKE AND KEY. Kimi is repped by UTA and Kaplan Perrone, and was a participant in Film Independent’s 2019 Episodic Lab.

VOICES ON THE ROAD Deep in the remote Peruvian Amazon a road is quietly destroying a protected rainforest, causing conflict and fear. But for some indigenous communities, desperate for change, it is also bringing hope. The road is cutting through a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Manu Biosphere Reserve, and opening it up to the outside world. Many indigenous communities are struggling to live in this 'paradise' and the road brings the promise of a better life. But at what cost? In 2018, she became an Explorer with the Scientific Exploration Society and received the Neville Shulman Explorer Award for Expedition Filmmaking. A freelance multimedia journalist, Bethan John specializes in biodiversity conservation and social justice. She's passionate about leading adventurous expeditions to unearth stories on the complex social, economic and environmental issues facing marginalized communities living in some of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

A WOMAN (Winner - Best Narrative Short) A young, modern mother struggles to find her place in Baku, Azerbaijan, a culture simultaneously Muslim and secular, progressive as it is traditional, and like her at a crossroads of seeming contradictions. Navigating the trappings of both conventional and modern female roles, she straddles the space between choice and responsibility where in the course of one day she can be a mother, a daughter, a wife, and still be herself. Director's Bio:<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/8906bd705d7f219db3549a0b77bf3270.jpg" width="150" style="max-width: 100%; display: inline; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 1em 1em;">Tahmina Rafaella is an Azerbaijani filmmaker and actor based in Los Angeles. In 2015, the Ministry of Culture &amp; Tourism of Azerbaijan funded her first feature film,&nbsp;INNER CITY, which she wrote and starred in. The film screened and competed in multiple film festivals around the world. Her directorial debut, A WOMAN, which she also wrote, produced and acted in premiered at Palm Springs ShortFest. She is an alumni of Talents Sarajevo.

THE MISSFITS (Winner - Special Jury Award for Filmmaker to Watch) An all-girls robotics team based in San Francisco is taking on the male-dominated field of engineering. They are determined to show other girls how fun and rewarding STEM can be, one robot at a time. The documentary follows The Missfits as they confront growing pains, build their robot, and travel to competitions. The diverse team is made up of twenty girls from high schools around the Bay Area ranging in age from fifteen to eighteen and coming from a variety of backgrounds. On their own, they are outsiders, misfits. But together, on the team, they build each other up and learn to embrace their own identities. She began her career in Los Angeles where she produced numerous short films and narrative features. She has worked at CAA, CBS Films, and Super Deluxe in all aspects of Film and TV. Ellie is an alumna of Film Independent's Project Involve fellowship program and recently completed her MFA in Documentary Film at Stanford University. Her films have been featured on The Guardian, The New York Times, Short of the Week, SoulPancake, Starz, Vimeo Staff Pick, and screened at premier festivals around the world. She now lives in San Francisco and is developing her next documentary as a fellow in the SFFILM FilmHouse Residency Program.
