The Cypher.
Khalil, a young black rapper in Philly, is a rising star in the underground Rap Battle scene. He wins the semi-finals of The Cypher, giving him the chance to battle the fierce legend, Yung Reap, in the Final Battle. When Khalil goes to celebrate his success, we understand who he really is outside of the rap arena. No one knows the truth, not even his little sister Kiki. But when she discovers his secret, Kiki unwittingly sets in motion events that might destroy her brother's chances for success.
Shéár Avory: To Be Continued.
Shéár Avory: To Be Continued is the coming of age story of Shéár Avory (pronouns: they/them/theirs), a 17 year old trans aspiring social justice advocate in Los Angeles who navigates housing instability and familial dependency on their journey to adulthood. A story of tender love yet hollow promise, Shéár depends closely on their mother for continued access to their medical transition, though struggling in her recovery from addiction, she is unable to always offer Shéár the support they need. An observational piece, the film aims to ask, what does coming into adulthood actually look like, for a young Black trans femme in today’s America??
BLACKN3SS.
Between melanin and distant planets, BLACKN3SS dives into the journey of the black youth of São Paulo. Merging interviews and performances, the movie presents the aesthetics of those who accept, recognize and comprehend their own blackness as something positive and useful in the anti racist battle. These artists work and struggle daily not only in their bodies and individualities, but also transforming the communities and the city they live in, feeding from diverse references both from Brazil and the World. A documentary on blackness, queerness and spacial aspirations of the diaspora's children.
The films in this programme are eligible for the Co-op Audience Award. The voting period has closed. Stay tuned for the results!
