
In 1978, as a result of Law 180 - the Basaglia Law – asylums were permanently closed in Italy, paving the way for a revolution in the field of mental health: no longer restraining but integrative. As of today, Italy is the only country in the world that drastically implemented this deinstitutionalization. In spite of this, 44 years later, many patients and workers in the sector I have met, acknowledge that asylums still exist: they are multicenter and have different walls than they once did – now they are transparent.
