Based on a true story, this detailed, richly dramatized and designed historical drama explores the visitation of the Inquisition to the city of Oporto, Portugal in 1618. During this dark chapter in European history, the city's entire population is ordered to denounce heresy under pain of excommunication. In a city where a large part of the population had been forcibly converted from Judaism during the Spanish Inquisition, over one hundred New Christians, among others, were imprisoned, causing terror in the New Christian community, mass emigration, and the near-total destruction of the city’s economy.

With his family and community in grave danger, António Álvares decides to outline a plan for all those at risk of harm to escape the pervasive anti-Semitism while the Inquisition continues the persecution of Portuguese Jews all around him. Stirring performances, stunning costume and scenic design, and a sumptuous score bring to the fore a tragic chapter of distant past that reverberates to this day.
