Guri Alfi, one of Israel’s most popular comedians and TV personalities, is the host of The New Jew, a four-part mini-series produced for Israel’s Public Broadcasting Corporation. The series explores the vibrant and creative expressions of Jewishness that can be found throughout North America. Guri sets out on a journey where he discovers a “Judaism” that is pluralistic, multi-cultural, and packed with promise. As he meets with female rabbis, observes the Sabbath in unlikely places, and hears the perspectives of recent converts and young Jews of color, he takes the opportunity to introduce the Holy Land to what he calls the “New Jew.” Guri’s experience of moving to the United States in the summer of 2018, and the identity crisis that followed, inspired the making of this fast-paced, often funny, insightful, and pointedly hopefuljourney through modern American Jewry. This JFilm screening will include two of the four episodes, one of which features native Pittsburgher, Bari Weiss.
Official Selection: Philadelphia, Miami Jewish film festivals
“Guri Alfi sets out to understand American Jews with lots of good intentions. He is funny, honest, and his chemistry with the people around him is magical—which in itself makes The New Jew fun to watch” —Nadav Manuchin, Walla
