About the Conversation:
Stuart “Stu” Eizenstat, Tevi Troy, and Dennis Ross discuss how they navigated Jewish issues and causes during their tenures in the West Wing.
During his long and impactful career in public service, Stuart Eizenstat served in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001) as the US Ambassador to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce, Under Secretary of State, and as the US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (1999-2001). He was critical to reviving justice for Holocaust survivors as Special Representative on Holocaust-Era Issues to President Clinton and Secretary of State Albright, and then in the Obama administration (2009-2017) as Special Adviser to Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. He served as President Jimmy Carter’s Chief Domestic Policy Adviser (1977-1981), where he was a “backchannel” to the Israeli government on the Middle East peace process, and recommended creation of the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust chaired by Eli Wiesel, which led directly to the creation of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Eizenstat’s portfolio of responsibilities was extensive and varied in these roles, but he was sensitive to causes affecting the Jewish community at home and abroad.
Joining Eizenstat for this discussion are Tevi Troy, former deputy secretary of the U.S. HHS, Deputy Cabinet Secretary and official Liaison to the Jewish community in George W. Bush’s White House, and presidential historian who has written four books on the presidency, including, most recently, “Fight House: Rivalries in the White House, from Truman to Trump”; and Dennis Ross, former special assistant to President Barack Obama and Director of Policy Planning for the State Department. Ambassador Ross has served as the principal Middle East peace negotiator for Democratic and Republican presidents for 20 years. He is now a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He and Ambassador Eizenstat co-chair the Jewish People’s Policy Institute of Jerusalem, an Israeli think tank examining issues impacting on Israel and the Diaspora.
Jonathan Gruber’s short biopic Stu, created on the occasion of Eizenstat’s 75th birthday, provides a starting off point for the discussion. Gruber will open the panel discussion with brief introductory remarks.
