In this witty, provocative, and moving film, Balram Halwai (Adarsh Gourav) has been trained by Indian society to be one thing — a poor servant. Based on the New York Times bestseller and 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel by Aravind Adiga.
Q&A with screenwriter and director Ramin Bahrani

RAMIN BAHRANI | Screenwriter, Director, Producer
Ramin is an Iranian American writer, director, and producer. His critically-acclaimed films Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo, At Any Price, and 99 Homes, have all premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, London Film Festival, and the Deauville Film Festival.
He recently produced Alexandre Moratto’s feature film, Socrates, which won international acclaim and garnered three Spirit Award nominations in 2019, and he is scheduled to produce Moratto’s new film, 7 Slaves for Netflix. He also produced, director Alex Camilleri’s Luzzu, which will premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
For television, Bahrani’s HBO film, Fahrenheit 451, starring Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon, received 5 Emmy Award nominations, including Best TV Movie, and earned him a PGA award for best television film.
Ramin is a Guggenheim Fellowship winner, and has been the subject of retrospectives around the world. His cinematic oeuvre is housed in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
