BRIAN AND CHARLES

FILM: 7:00 PM (PDT) | Q&A: 8:30 PM (PDT)

Brian is a lonely, luckless inventor in rural Wales who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. After a particularly harsh and depressing winter, he uses a washing machine and various spare parts to invent an artificially intelligent robot, who he names Charles. What follows is a humorous and entirely heartwarming story about loneliness, friendship, family, finding love, and letting go. Official selection of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, World Dramatic Competition.

Q&A immediately following the screening with the film's co-stars Chris Hayward and David Earl, director Jim Archer, and producer Rupert Majendie.

An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, a washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves a charming, cheeky companion. Before long, however, Charles also develops autonomy. Intrigued by the wider world — or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away — Charles craves adventure.
