Synopsis: Stop motion short about a walk in the woods

Juror comments: The stop motion in A "Not So Grand" Day Out is interesting with the props and animation of the protagonist. I like the set design, which is garden that is built by hand. I also like the way that the flower and the main character emotions' are shown indirectly, where the flower uses its body language to display its emotions. I also like the violent part is portrayed in the most appropriate way possible.

This film is a stop motion animated short about a girl taking a walk in the woods that goes awry.

I like that the story shows the flower as a character and portrays the idea that if you see a sign that does not allow something, you should not do it. I also that how the protagonist’s curiosity shows us why she cannot abide by the sign’s message. The close-up where the larger flower sneaks up behind the girl’s back perfectly displays the flower’s emotions. I like the set as it fits the idea of a typical garden. The background music did not appeal to me. It is too high-pitched and annoying, but it isn’t bad enough to keep me from liking the film. I just would have preferred something not so squeaky. My favorite part is when the girl walking through the garden and notices the sign.

The message is about following the rules. Why some people like to destroy things is odd to me.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 4 to 12, plus adults. Reviewed by Tom W. and Julie S., KIDS FIRST!
