Juror comments: Kids Who Save the World: Upcycling with ten-year-old Nevaeh-Rae put the fire under my feet to upcycle old clothes, blankets, curtains, rugs, and all kinds of things that have outlived their regular life.

The star of this short film is Nevaeh, an adorable, articulate girl of color who loves nature and is concerned about the environment. She explains that upcycling is like recycling or reusing, but value-added. Nevaeh-Rae’s mother taught her how to make gloves from old jeans, a purse from an old jacket, and sachets from scraps of material. New clothes require manufacturers to use energy and burn fossil fuels as well as pollute the air; if everyone that loves nature would try upcycling it could make a huge difference to the planet.

This beautifully shot and edited film moves right along. I especially enjoy the nature shots. I was disappointed that there are no music credits because the music is beautiful and I wanted to know who the composer is. All and all, the flow of the narrative with the beautiful cinematography and music is super captivating and instructional. Nevaeh-Rae is an inspirational young woman and she is a clear communicator.

I rate Kids Who Save the World: Upcycling 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. By Nancy K., KIDS FIRST!
