This is the story of Japanese American youth basketball. Why and who started this tradition going back over 100 years. By the 1970s Japanese American basketball became a cultural phenomenon. It’s estimated that over 20,000 Japanese American kids compete annually in California alone. Today It’s a rite of passage where some families have played five generations.

Seniors Fight Back founded by Hong Lee, is an all volunteer organization providing free instructions to seniors in the Los Angeles and Orange County ares at city parks. The volunteer instructors are Martial Arts individuals they teach safety knowledge. The focus is be safe, know your surroundings and learn how to protect yourself when attacked. While researching her grandfather’s WWI military experiences, the filmmaker came across a collection of photos of Japanese-Canadian soldiers killed in action, but not of survivors. Divine intervention comes to the rescue in the form of a community historian, Debbie Jiang, who not only finds Private Omoto but shares his photo with the Vancouver community. Japanese American Military Veterans of the Vietnam war period faced a unique and lonely challenge.They returned to their homes amidst the anti-war fervor of the late 1960’s and most veterans were directly advised to not wear their uniforms as they walked out of military bases where they had served for two or more years. Less than 25 years earlier as toddlers or to be born a few years earlier their families were discharged from concentration camps with the same message. This film explores the story of one such vet and family.
