Washington, DC has long been defined by political power, but beneath its monuments and marble corridors, a vibrant Black creative community upholding the culture of creativity that helped make DC Chocolate City. Creating While Black: DC is a documentary short that goes inside the lives and creative spaces of creatives who are driving its creative renaissance while confronting the challenges of gentrification and coming home. The film profiles : Jason Reynolds, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author who has transformed how a generation sees itself in literature; Marajuan Canaday, a producer and filmmaker whose lens captures stories that mainstream media too often overlooks; and Chela Mitchell, a gallery owner whose space serves as both sanctuary and stage for Black art and artists in the District. Together, their stories form a portrait of city, creativity, reclamation of home, and of what it truly means to create while Black in America's most watched city. Creating While Black: DC is both a love letter to a community and a challenge to the narratives that have too often left them out.
