Alejo, an archaeologist from Lima, travels to Canada, where his Peruvian family migrated years ago, settling in Newmarket, just north of Toronto. It is his first time back in two decades and his first appearance since the death of his mother. His arrival arouses mixed feelings in his father and two brothers, while an unexpected bond forms between Alejo and Sophie, his brother's girlfriend. During Alejo's stay in Newmarket, however, old family resentments are rekindled and dark secrets are brought to light, particularly involving Alejo and his father. Alejo must finally confront the truth about himself and his family and, more dramatic and urgent still, decide whether his future lies in Canada or in Peru.
