Arctic Summer is a poetic meditation on Tuktoyaktuk, an Indigenous community in the Arctic. The film captures Tuk during one of the last summers before climate change forced Tuk’s coastal population to relocate to more habitable land.
Training their cameras on the everyday lives, struggles, and dreams of the people of Tuktoyaktuk, the filmmakers create an abstract, impressionist portrait of the town. In Arctic Summer, the viewer experiences children playing in a northern wasteland that is both beautiful and decrepit, teenagers stuck in school while daydreaming of escaping to a big city, and elders witnessing their Indigenous culture disappear, all while their land sinks into the Arctic Ocean.
