A film about inclusion, identity and hand-drawn heroes. If you can’t find a hero, create your own; for mountain biker, skier and artist Brooklyn Bell, that hand-drawn hero was a comic character named Ruby J. Using Ruby as a role model, Brooklyn set out to “live like her, breathe like her, be unapologetically black like her,” finding her own identity in a mix of dirt, snow, art and inclusion.

With a filter that is oh-so-California, this film — which was shot on Kodak film — celebrates young women athletes breaking into sports long dominated by men. They are skateboarders, surfers and longboarders. “Headstrong is a word reserved for girls who break the mold,” one says. “And the mold is to play it safe.”

To Scottish mountain climber and polar explorer Myrtle Simpson, it’s not an adventure unless you’re living off your wits. Simpson has scaled Andean peaks, dragged a sledge across glaciers and sea ice and attempted to reach the North Pole. As she approaches 90 years old, Simpson vividly recounts her adventures on the ice and finally receives the Polar Medal from Queen Elizabeth 50 years after she became the first woman to cross Greenland’s polar ice cap.

In August 2018, dismayed by adults’ lack of action on the global climate crisis, the teenager sat herself down in front of the Swedish Parliament, pledging to strike from school every Friday until Sweden aligned its policies with the Paris Agreement. Greta’s actions have earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination and speaking engagements at the World Economic Forum and COP24—but most importantly, they’ve encouraged students from all over the globe to stand up for Earth and their futures.
