A doctor takes a dark turn as he experiments on himself in this classic 1936 horror flick in the tradition of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His injections transform him into a raging monster, hell-bent on attacking his colleagues. The Scalpel is the work of Richard Lyford, a then-19-year-old budding Seattle filmmaker who experimented with special effects, double exposures, and intense makeup. Decades after his death, Lyford's films were discovered in his home. Thanks to new restorations and orchestral music from composer Ed Hartman, Lyford's films have gained wide renown as some of the first indie films ever created outside of Hollywood.
