Свобода (Freedom) follows Ukrainian international student Dali Kapanadze over the course of 24 hours providing a snapshot of daily life during a historic moment. The film was shot on March 4 and 5 2022, just one week after the invasion of Ukraine. Kapanadze describes how the invasion has “put her life on pause;” she dedicates her time to helping her mother and grandmother come to Halifax and providing support to her friends who are staying in Ukraine. She watches the news, racked with worry for her community in Kyiv. We watch Kapanadze prepare for a rally, where the Ukrainian community in Halifax will collect donations and call for military aid. At the rally, support from fellow Ukrainians and Haligonians alike overwhelms Kapanadze. She feels a sense of purpose and knows she will continue fighting for her country’s freedom, even from the other side of the Atlantic.
