You probably know someone like Rosa – she’s the mainstay, underpaid employee who somehow does the work of four people, slogging away to the save the day for a company that barely knows she exists. Rosa is the one taking care of her aging parent’s daily little needs, because all her siblings are too busy with their own lives. Rosa’s friends and neighbors ask her to do their most inconvenient errands for them, because she’s just too nice to say “no”…

Rosa’s 45th birthday is coming up, and she’s never lived a day for herself. But all that changes when Rosa suddenly elopes and runs off to the small beach town of her childhood, where she is determined to get married to the person she realizes she must learn to love the most: herself. Rosa’s Wedding has a spectacular amount of laughs, as shocked family members and friends slowly adjust to Rosa’s internal transformation, all the while trying to figure out why they are getting destination wedding invitations (especially Rosa’s long-term, clueless boyfriend).

Why This Is A GEM:

- Rosa’s winsome determination to appreciate her own beauty, complexity and spirit is a lesson that we can all be freshly reminded of each and every day.

- The glorious Spanish actress Candela Peña – who has twice won acting awards at Miami Film Festival, for Torremolinos 73 in 2004 and Una pistol en cada mano in 2016 – has the greatest role of her career in Rosa, and she infuses Rosa with the essence of a truth so personal that it will resonate with you long after the movie has ended.

- Rosa’s Wedding is directed by the veteran, very talented filmmaker Icíar Bollaín, who told Cineuropa: “There are many Rosas in our midst, and we’re all a bit like her… Learning to know what one wants and refusing to give up on it is a tough test to overcome, and sometimes we never achieve it our entire lives. But Rosa is determined to pull it off.”

- The screenplay is co-written by Alicia Luna, who also told Cineuropa: “La boda de Rosa is connected to our life-changing decisions: because you hit an age at which you realize there are a lot of dreams that you haven’t been able to make come true, because you’ve been exposed to what other people decide you will do.”

Film Package Includes a Q&A with Director Icíar Bollaín, Moderated by Miami Film Festival's Lauren Cohen
