Intersections of image and power, reflexivity and co-creation, (in)visibility and social exclusion, preservation and destruction. Connecting visual culture, subjects’ agency and the power of institutions and states, these projects show artists engaging with problems of representation and documentary in real time.

Exploring alleyways through camera exposure and examining technological, geographic, and social exclusion, this film uses the "Paper Bag Test" and camera exposure principles to address the language and conventions of cinematographic technology/technique and its implications. With audio from an in person installation/performance of the film in Iowa City.

Paper Bag Test

Over 15 years the filmmaker visits the Loita Maasai in Kenya, becoming close friends with the brothers Lenaai and Matinkoi. Lenaai, aware of how the outside world looks at the Maasai, expresses that: "The thinking about the Maasai sometimes becomes really dangerous." Exploring this idea through an assemblage of three short self-reflexive films,&nbsp;All Eyez on Me&nbsp;addresses representation, authenticity, and the dilemma of visibility.

Lowland is an intimate portrait of a community of undocumented migrant Afghan children, living and working as garbage collectors in the margins of Tehran. Over the course of five years, the two filmmakers, Sepideh and Aidin, documented their encounters with the children first as ethnographers and volunteer teachers, and later as filmmakers. The film is an assemblage of personal everyday stories and gestures shared by the children of the Lowland as powerful individuals rather than mere child workers.
