In a remote forest in Eastern Poland, renowned archaeologist Wojciech Mazurek is overseeing a special digging project, which he hopes will bring to light the remaining traces of the Sobibor extermination center, a place much like the Biblical “sheol,” where souls enter but never return. As the dig progresses, thousands of objects that belonged to the victims emerge from the earth, fated to act as the last witnesses to the tragedy that unfolded nearly eight decades ago. But this excavation project has an imminent deadline, since it must be completed before construction begins on a new memorial museum being built on the site.
