The Splendours and Miseries of the House of Camondo Family unravels the remarkable saga of the Camondo family—once hailed as the “Rothschilds of the East.” Originating as Ottoman Jews on the banks of the Bosphorus in early 19th-century Constantinople, the Camondos built a vast banking empire before settling in France, where they became refined art patrons and philanthropists of Belle Époque society.
Their story sweeps through glittering Parisian salons and opulent châteaux, through the trenches of the First World War, and into the darkest chapter of European history: their tragic deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, their extraordinary art collections—gifted to France—are all that remain, silent witnesses to the lives, choices, and passions of a family whose splendor and sorrow shaped a century.
