The 2018 Mother Tongue Film Festival featured the first open call for films, receiving ninety-five submissions. The final selection of films featured twenty-nine languages from fourteen regions, with nearly every film shown showcasing a different mother tongue. Here are two films that spoke to us in 2018: Aviliaq: Entwined and Out of State.
El Festival de Cine de la Lengua Materna realizó su primera convocatoria abierta de películas en 2018 y recibió 95 postulaciones. La selección final de películas incluyó 29 idiomas de 14 regiones, y casi todas las películas proyectadas mostraban una lengua materna diferente.

This drama set in a 1950s Arctic outpost camp in Nunavut tells the story of two Inuit women struggling to maintain a romantic relationship in a new world run by outsiders.
This short was produced as part of the Embargo Collective project, created and supported by the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival to bring together visionary Indigenous filmmakers to push one another’s creativities through “creative obstructions.” The Embargo Collective II brings six Aboriginal Canadian women together: three returning mentors and three emerging visionaries, including Alethea Arnaquq-Baril.
