Nina Williams makes the case for highball bouldering as a sport, art form, problem solving, discipline and lifestyle. “I just want to reach this state of action of my body and tranquility in my mind,” she explains, making it sound simple. Williams’ first ascents of legendary routes are captured in suspenseful and beautiful film sequences. “It’s easy to be inspired by Nina,” says her partner, James Lucas. This is an intimate portrait of an elite climber at the top of her game.

The High Road

Chris Hill, an angler and environmental lobbyist, has long found solace in the outdoors. And yet she didn’t see people like herself out there until recently. Through Instagram and other social media platforms, she says, underrepresented voices are creating a new kind of conservation movement. “People who are of marginalized communities have just banded together and said, ‘we’re gonna do it ourselves, we’re gonna create space in the outdoors for people who look like us.’”

Climber Hazel Findlay tackles the extremely challenging Concepción, a 70-meter splitter crack route in Day Canyon outside Moab. “It’s quite unusual, I think, to feel that insecure in every move,” she explains after getting her “ass kicked a little bit.” But Findlay lowers her expectations, relieves her performance anxiety and solves a problem that’s all about getting a small “bit of your index finger to stick on the rock.”

Concepción

“For me it’s always been about skiing powder,” says Lee Cohen, whose life has been spent – where else? — at Alta. Cohen’s four-plus decades of “perfect” powder shots testify to an obsession and undiluted devotion to a mountain he knows intimately.
