Tuvalu, the fourth-smallest country in the world by area, is a delicate ribbon of land in the Pacific Ocean whose inhabitants’ lives have long been intertwined with the sea. With climate change, however, that sea might swallow their homeland; climate models predict the island’s current children may be the last native Tuvaluans. This short but striking film follows the activists working to change that fate. Life after a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease may seem especially unthinkable for a professional musician. Croatian-born guitarist and composer Nenad Bach was at the top of an international career when he was diagnosed, but “it maybe prolonged my life,” he says, “because it slowed me down.” His most effective treatment, which he discovered accidentally, is playing ping pong. It’s an activity he now shares with other people with Parkinson’s through his organization, Ping Pong Parkinson. In 1995, Marjorie Eliot moved the couch out of her living room and began hosting free Sunday jazz concerts. Her Harlem living room — “Triple Nickel” — became a legendary artists haven, welcoming a score of jazz legends. Eliot has hosted this rich history unfailingly for 26 years, utilizing music and community as potent remedies for grief.

Every weekday, dozens of inmates are released on parole from the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville. Their first stop is the Greyhound bus station, where they take their first tentative steps back into life on the outside. The abrupt return of everyday satisfactions — like scratching a lottery ticket, smoking a cigarette and putting on a spritz of cologne are overwhelming to some. Huntsville Station is a meditative look at the first moments of a major life transition as the former inmates reflect on their past and plan for the future.

As a member of a multi-generational trap fishing family, Corey Forrest carried her children in Baby Bjorns and backpacks as she sorted fish, tied knots and pulled lines. She raised her kids amidst a proud heritage that’s now the last of its kind in Rhode Island. For four generations, Forrest’s family has skillfully maintained their traditional, hand-hauling trap fishing methods with a deep reverence for the natural world. Using decades-old equipment and grappling with the inherent economic hardships of her trade, Forrest is hopeful that she’ll be able to sustain her family’s uncommon and purposeful way of life.
