The Arctic ice cap is melting much faster than predicted - scientists still lack data to refine their predictions. For example, the precise thickness of the ice is difficult to determine. 


To help solve this problem, Grenoble-based researchers will, for the first time, set up microphones in the closest inhabited region to the North Pole. The Svalbard archipelago has long been attractive for its coal deposits and is today at the forefront of climate change.
