Tender and wistful, with dashes of comedy and fantasy, Akiko Ohku’s film follows single, 40-something Yoshiko (Yasuko Matsuyuki) as she enjoys life’s simple pleasures —riding her beloved bike, indulging in a drink or two in the evening —as she narrates her thoughts through a hypnotic internal monologue. A loner by nature, she starts to come out of her shell thanks to a friendship with a younger co-worker, which in turn leads to a relationship with a man more than twenty years her junior. Ohku, who previously depicted the lives of women in their twenties (Tremble All You Want) and thirties (Marriage Hunting Beauty), attunes her film to the changing light of the seasons and creates marvelous visual compositions out of the most everyday settings. Pour yourself a glass (or two) of your favorite tipple and enjoy.
