Now in their 70s, these sisters do exactly as they please: they live near the beach, they always have a movie on, and the candy drawer is fully stocked.

In Japanese, mizuko–– water child–– is used to refer to both miscarried and aborted pregnancies. In addition to this word, there's a Buddhist ritual for grief called mizuko kuyo that allows women to metaphorically return their water children to the sea. Told through the Japanese American filmmaker’s personal story of abortion in the US, Mizuko (Water Child) is a partially animated, intimate reckoning with the impact of the cultural context of unborn life.

In the South Carolina Indigenous Guatemalan community, women face healthcare barriers that make it difficult to carry their pregnancies to term. Here, pregnant Erlinda longs for the familiar tastes of the nopal fruit, while Fabiana spends her days making tamales to get over a heartbreaking loss. An intimate look at family life, Tamales y Tunas asks what it means to make one’s way through motherhood far from the comforts of home.

Prompted by intimate conversations and layered with found footage, Kasumu questions the production of identity as it relates to her own personal affiliations with language; moments of tenderness which remain interwoven with love and aching. Focusing on the geographic entanglements of “foreign” identity and the cultural mobility of knowledge throughout history - presented are non-linear narratives on the manners of displacement which are part of the generational immigrant experience from the cradle, across the Atlantic ocean and then finally to the grave.
