In and out of jail since she was 15, Jacinta is 26 when the film opens, finishing up her nine-month sentence at the Maine Correctional Center where her mother is also doing time. Deeply codependent, their roles are often reversed, revealing a complex relationship seeded in cycles of addiction, crime, and incarceration. Over the course of the film, we see Jacinta struggling to keep from repeating her mother’s mistakes. We see her daughter, Caylynn, mature from a young girl desperate for her mother’s affection to a preteen wary of her mother’s choices. Shot over four years, Jessica Earnshaw’s first feature documentary is a deeply personal look at hope and determination in the face of insurmountable obstacles and what it means, as mothers and daughters, to truly love one another, even if that ultimately means having to let go. -Kiyoko McCrae
