In Pine Lake, Georgia, all major City leadership roles are occupied by women–– the entire city council, the Mayor, and the Chief of Police. This might bring to mind images of a liberal paradise where art is paramount and a general air of openness and acceptance abounds. Within the majority white city, this fantasy feels real to most citizens. But drive just to the edge of the city limits and it becomes clear that the reality of Pine Lake is one of historical segregation, where the Black community is plagued by over-policing and a lack of resources. Functioning as a microcosm for the friction that exists within modern American liberal politics, Welcome to Pine Lake interrogates the concept of allyship and the willful ignorance that privilege allows. -Greta Hagen-Richardson
