Hanif, a Muslim man in Newark, works as a casket builder and mentors two at-risk boys. He works very hard to help them escape a system that depends on their subjugation while simultaneously struggling to move beyond his own past. Hanif is a complex figure. Flawed, compassionate, and committed to enduring despite societal pressures, he is doing his best to make change in whatever small way he can. Beautiful, meditative, and simple--and with reverence and a deep gratitude for the Black body rarely depicted in cinema--Two Gods considers how each person can forever alter the lives of those around them. Director Zeshawn Ali imagines a world where fellowship and ritual can be the way out. -Greta Hagen-Richardson
