When his grandmother is accused of witchcraft, Karisa, a young Kenyan man, travels back to his rural home. Once there, he finds that she is just one of hundreds of elders being targeted by their own children under the guise of protecting Christian interests. With each new piece of information, Karisa comes to understand the latent destructive power of colonialism as greed and religion work in tandem to wipe out an entire generation of people. Initially it may seem that The Letter takes place on an unfamiliar landscape with different values and a foreign process for seeking justice. However, as the financial self-interest of one group eradicates traditions and destroys families, it is easy to recognize the toll of capitalism on the individual, society, and the spirit of a people. -Greta Hagen-Richardson
