Presented by Documentary Producers Alliance Regional Committee. A three-film case study of documentary producers currently filming during Covid-19. Producers will discuss, in detail, not only the obstacles, but how they overcame them. How each film’s unique circumstances and approach to filming challenged these producers to “find a way.” This live panel will be followed by a brief Q&A open to virtual audience members.
Shawna Brakefield-Haase (moderator)
Shawna Brakefield-Haase (producer/director) of The Brakefield Company is an Emmy Award®-winning documentary producer whose most recent film A La Calle about the crisis in Venezuela, is in competition at Doc NYC November 11-19. Brakefield-Haase is currently directing the feature documentary Life Without Compromise about two-time Olympian, four-time world champion kayaker Eric Jackson. Previous projects include Momentum Generation (HBO Sports), 2018 Tribeca Film Festival audience award runner-up; Nossa Chape (Fox Sports), which premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival; and Give Us This Day (AT&T Audience), which also premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. She served as consulting producer on “Phenoms,” a six-episodic specials airing on Fox Sports during the FIFA World Cup and Girls Can’t Surf a feature documentary on the pioneering female surfers from the 80’s and 90’s and their four-decade fight for equal pay. Also known for her archival work, she was the recipient of the prestigious 2019 FOCAL Award for Best Use of Footage in a Sports Production for Momentum Generation and recently served as archival producer on “The Super Bowl That Wasn’t” for NFL Network and “The Three Knockdown Rule: Hit Like A Girl” for ESPN+.
Sara Archambault
Sara Archambault is a Creative Producer dedicated to the craft of artful nonfiction storytelling. She has an extensive professional history in production, programming and foundation work, including 10 years as Program Director at the LEF Foundation, and 9 years as Head Programmer of award-winning documentary film series The DocYard. Past producing credits include Emmy-nominated documentary Traces of the Trade (Sundance, POV 2008), Sundance-supported Street Fighting Men (FRF release 2020), award-winning short Community Patrol (Big Sky, T/F 2018) and Truth or Consequences (Rotterdam 2020). Sara's work has received support from Tribeca Film Institute, Sundance Film Institute, SFFILM, Catapult Film Fund, Hot Docs International Pitch Forum, Film Independent, Stella Artois/Women in Film Finishing Fund and IFP Spotlight on Documentaries among others. Sara is a 2020 Impact Partners Producing Fellow and received the 2020 Nonfiction Vanguard Award from SF DocFest.
Andrew Hinton
Andrew Hinton is a director/producer from the UK/New York who recently relocated to Portland, Oregon where he makes short docs with and about artists and athletes. He cares most about– compassion, communication and connection. He focused on drama and documentary until settling as in-house studio producer for CC-Lab in London, which led to music videos, performance films, working with brands and many late nights. It was the start of a creative relationship with director Paul Kelly and the band Saint Etienne. More recently his film Tashi And The Monk (made with friend and collaborator Johnny Burke) is a 40 minute documentary about a remarkable children’s community in the Himalayas where he debuted the film at Mountainfilm in Telluride where it picked up two awards, got noticed by HBO who jumped on board, and set the course for a remarkable worldwide journey which culminated in 27 awards including an Emmy Award. Hinton has produced several projects for Christie's, On Running, CNBC and PBS. His most recently masterpiece Cocoon interviews children during Covid-19 lockdown.
