In Execution, director Stavit Allweis takes the true crime phenomenon and promptly illuminates the gross reality behind the macabre, voyeuristic hobby. For 45 minutes, one man after the other is brought into a classroom and tied to a chair. His crimes against women are read aloud without much pageantry and then he is killed. Staged as a pseudo-trial with a jury of women most clearly identifiable by their stereotypical characteristics, the executions are a foregone conclusion. Though challenging in its unflinching and, at times, bizarre approach to confronting how little worth the world appears to place on the lives of women, Execution is a creative and original work. No time is given to the men’s objections or cries for help. One can imagine this treatment is a reflection of the care given to their victims as they were raped and murdered.Don’t try to pin down every thread of this film. It brings to mind the New French Extremity entry Baise-moi (dir. Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi) in its callus, though justified, methods. Despite the colorful animations and, perhaps, outsized level of commitment given to lunch orders, there is anger and frustration boiling at the center. Fascinating and experimental in design, Execution will leave you with plenty to ruminate on. -Greta Hagen-Richardson
