After spotting what they believe is a UFO outside their window, a middle-aged Pakistani couple searches for answers.

When COVID-19 broke out in the US, filmmaker Yeon Park and her husband Jonghyun Kim were trapped in their home in California like everyone else. But as immigrants they were stuck in the US, waiting for the green cards which would allow them to visit their home in South Korea. Yeon reflects on what home is, as she longs for a home that cannot be confined to a physical place of residence.

They are assigned on a mission to travel to Earth, Germany, in the year 2020. Here, the N-word is still uttered, Afro-Germans are invisible and Germanness and Blackness are a contradiction, an error in the system. The Door of Return is an Afro-futuristic documentary, a thought experiment that is both a critique of our present and a vision for the future.
