Perfume de Gardenias opens with the passing of Isabel’s husband. At 80 years old, she must find a new way to live despite the all-encompassing grief. In an effort to honor her husband in death, Isabel crafts a beautiful and unique service. Her neighbor, Toña, attends the wake and encourages her to use that same creativity to plan the funerals of the aging and ill people in their community. Feeling aimless and alone, Isabel decides to take Toña up on the offer and is suddenly immersed in a world she never knew existed. Providing the opportunity to help those close to death have a say in how they want to be remembered, Isabel discovers she has a special gift.

Director Macha Colón crafts a wonderful and funny story about finding new meaning at any age. With an impeccable eye for detail, color, and design, Colón imagines a reality where a death can be celebrated as well as mourned. Set in Puerto Rico, Perfume de Gardenias feels incredibly special and authentic, while remaining wholly unique. -Greta Hagen-Richardson
